Boston, Mass. - April 30, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team defeated Emerson College, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon and clinched a spot in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament this upcoming week.
The Lyons, which earned the No. 6 seed in the Championship Tournament, will travel to third-seeded Babson for a match on Tuesday, May 3. With the win, Mount Holyoke improves to 4-9 on the year with a 3-5 record in the NEWMAC.
Standout first-year Annika Chai (London, England) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) delivered an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, before Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) and Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) clinched a tight 8-7 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles to give the Lyons a 2-1 edge heading to singles play.
There, Chai won once again 6-3, 6-2, while Kavale also won at No. 2 singles to keep the momentum going for the Lyons. At No. 3 singles, Aamoum won 6-3, 6-1, while Middleton took care of business at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Both Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Claudia Gonzalez-Vazquez (Cancun, Mexico) put up strong efforts at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, but were outlasted.
