No. 6 MIT Blanks Tennis, 9-0

South Hadley, Mass. - April 16, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team fell to nationally-ranked MIT, 9-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at the MHC Field House on Saturday afternoon.

MIT took a quick 3-0 lead in the match, sweeping all three doubles matchups. At No. 1 doubles, Kim Liao and Yuka Perera, who entered Saturday ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Region as a doubles team, topped Annika Chai (London, England) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) 8-2. Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil, Nadu, India) and Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) fell to Sarah Pertsemlidis and Seraphin Castelino at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, before MIT's Irene Huang and Sara Fernandez topped Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Claudia Gonzalez-Vazquez (Cancun, Mexico) at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.

Liao would go on to defeat Cavale 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, before Aamoum dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Jessica Lu at No. 3. Middleton dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Ashley Teng at No. 4 singles, while Cheng fell to Huang 6-3, 6-0 and Gonzalez-Vazquez fell 6-0, 6-0 to Sara Fernandez at No. 6 singles.

Wrapping up the day at No. 1 singles, Chai fell to Pertsemlidis, who was the No. 6-ranked singles player in the Northeast Region, 6-1, 6-3.
