Tennis Suffers Setback to Holy Cross in Season Opener

South Hadley, Mass. - September 16, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team fell to Division-I Holy Cross on Thursday evening as the Lyons opened the 2021-22 campaign against the Crusaders in the MHC Field House.

The Lyons lone victor was Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.), who bested Lauren Chilton at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1. 

In doubles play, Aamoum and first-year Annika Chai (London, England) teamed up at No. 1 singles and fell to Maddie DeNucci and Ahana Nagarkatti 8-4, before Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) and Vy Hoang (Youngstown, Ohio) represented the Lyons at No. 2 doubles and dropped an 8-4 decision to Lauren Chilton and Hanna Beck. Rounding out doubles at No. 3 was Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii), who fell to Meg O'Melveny and Melissa Caiola 8-6.

DeNucci topped Chai at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, before Kiran Cavale was bested by Nagarkatti 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2. Hoang fell to Beck 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, while Middleton suffered a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Caroline Fredey at No. 5. Cheng dropped 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 to O'Melveny.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will host Simmons College on Saturday, September 18 at 3 p.m.
