Golf Posts Eighth in Spring Opener at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - It was a rebounding effort on Sunday as the Mount Holyoke College golf team improved by 23 strokes to earn eighth overall at the Vassar Invitational, hosted a Casperkill Country Club. The Lyons posted a combined score of 675 (349-326), while Williams earned the team victory with a combined 609 (301-308).

Junior Stephanie Spitzer paced the Lyons in the Final Round, recording a score of 79. That mark was one stroke better than her Saturday mark of 80 as she finished 17th overall with a combined 159. Classmate Susan Lee rallied on day two for a combined 163 - good for 23rd overall. Her efforts were a major rebound from Saturday as she went from an 86 to a 77 in the Final Round.

First year Cortney Qiu also had a solid five-stroke improvement from the opening round, taking 33rd overall with a combined 167. After shooting an 86 on day one, she carded an 81 on Sunday.

Rounding out the action was sophomore Lahela Delaney, who finished 55th in the field with a combined 186. Her rebound from Saturday's day one of 97 was also notable as she shot 89 on Sunday.

In addition to Williams, New York University placed second overall with a score of 615 (310-305), Wellesley was third with 639 (319-320), followed by Middlebury (321-325--646) and Amherst (327-321--648) to round out the top five. SUNY Cortland's Danielle Bambola earned individual medalist honors after a combined 147 (71-76).

Mount Holyoke returns to the links next weekend when it competes at the Jack Leaman Invitational, hosted by Amherst College. Action runs Saturday through Sunday.
