Tennis Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Semifinals

BABSON PARK, Mass.--Top-seeded MIT dropped just two games in doubles and cruised to two easy victories in singles play on its way to defeating fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke College, 5-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal at Farwell Courts on the campus of Babson College on Saturday afternoon.

With its 28th consecutive win over a league opponent, MIT (10-0) will make its fourth straight conference finals appearance on Sunday afternoon. Mount Holyoke wraps up the fall at 7-6.

The Engineers' duo of senior Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and first-year Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) earned the first point of the day with an 8-0 triumph over the Lyons pairing of senior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn.) and sophomore Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) at number two doubles.

Junior Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and sophomore Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) put MIT ahead 2-0 with an 8-1 win over junior Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and first-year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) at number one, and sophomore Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) and first-year Dora Tzeng (Freemont, Calif.) completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory over Mount Holyoke sophomores Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.) and Mira Murali (Fall City, Wash.) at number three.

Kohrs gave the Engineers their fourth point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Holloschutz at number one singles, and Tzeng secured the match with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Colas at number five. MIT lead in each of the other four singles matches at the time of completion.
