SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team got solid contribution across the board on Thursday evening as the Lyons posted a 9-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph at the MHC Tennis Courts. The win moves MHC to 2-1 on the season, while the BlueJays slip to 0-1 on the season.
Mount Holyoke opened the match with a strong effort in doubles. The first flight pairing of junior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and first year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern High School for Girls) posted an 8-1 victory over sophomore Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, Conn./Platt) and senior Emely Chenard (Meriden, Conn./Platt) to move to 3-0 on the season.
Senior captain Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) and sophomore Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) followed up with an 8-2 win against seniors Meghan Toth (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) and Lisa Wawrzynowski (Newington, Conn./Newington) in the second flight, while MHC sophomore Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and junior Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational College) downed sophomore Monica Palmieri (Bristol, Conn./St. Paul) and first year Tara Smith (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) by an 8-2 margin in third flight.
Singles action saw Holloschutz defeat Mauri in the first flight, 6-2, 6-0, while Anischik was victorious at second with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against senior Amanda Willhoft (Manchester, Conn./Manchester). Murali, Tibrewal and Colas all improved to 3-0 on the season with victories in the third, fourth and fifth flights, respectively.
Murali posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Toth, Tibrewal downed Wawrzynowski, 6-0, 6-0, and Colas had a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chenard. Cai wrapped up the success for the Lyons in the sixth flight, claiming a 6-0, 6-0 win over junior Serena Sundara (Windsor, Conn./Windsor).
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it opens NEWMAC play at Wheaton at 1pm. Saint Joseph is also in action on Saturday at Mitchell for a 12pm contest.
