Tennis Falls to Babson in NEWMAC Season Finale

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College dropped just five games in three doubles matches and collected six straight-set victories in singles on its way to defeating visiting Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Boston Sports Club.

With its third straight victory, Babson is now 11-2 overall and finishes at 6-2 in conference play, wrapping up the third seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. Mount Holyoke, which had won three consecutive matches, drops to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in league play, and will be the fifth seed in the conference tournament.

Senior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) and first-year Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) wrapped up conference play by staying unbeaten at number one doubles for the Beavers with an 8-1 win over the Lyons' duo of junior Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and first-year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India). First-years Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) cruised to an 8-3 triumph at number two, and senior Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) and junior Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) had little trouble in an 8-1 win at number three.

Akgul rolled past Holloschutz, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles, and Freeman topped senior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn.), 6-2, 6-0, at number two. Quenard and Paolino posted identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at number three and four, respectively, while Ferraro was victorious over Mount Holyoke sophomore Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.), 6-2, 6-3, at number five. Babson first-year Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) collected the final point of the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over junior Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China).

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Tufts at 2 p.m., while Mount Holyoke will host the NEWITT Tournament starting on Friday morning.
