Tennis Concludes Play at NEWITT Tournament

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team concluded play at the 2014 NEWITT Tournament on Saturday at its own courts. The Lyons saw four pairs in action during the day, paced by a quarterfinals effort from Mira Murali and Alexa Colas, who were playing in the C draw.

Colas and Murali, who defeated Brandeis's Dylan Schlesinger and Sarita Biswas by a 2-1 margin on Friday, squared off against Nichols's Cristina Szepanski and Lindsay Benoit on Saturday. Murali shouldered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Szepanski, while Colas fell to Benoit, 6-2, 6-1. The duo then shouldered an 8-5 loss in doubles to conclude tournament play.

The Lyons top pair of Margaux Holloschutz and Ishita Tibrewal faced off against Simmons' Theresa Reinhard and Meghan Cokely in the B draw consolations. Holloschutz suffered a tough 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 loss to Reinhard, while Cokley was a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Tibrewal. The pair fell by an 8-3 margin in doubles.

Other B draw action saw MHC's Sarah Anischik and Amy Chen square off against  Nichols' Alanna Judd and Lauren Candia. Anischik posted a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Judd, while Candia won by default against Chen. The Lyons' duo suffered an 8-3 loss in doubles action.

Rounding out the action for the Lyons was the four pair of Katherine Schumacher and Madeline Derentz., who took on the Smith duo of Margaret Anne Smith and Samantha Peikes. Schumacher fell by a 6-1, 6-0 margin to Smith, while Derentz was a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Peikes. The Pioneers duo also grabbed an 8-3 victory.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Norton, Mass., to open play at the 2014 NEWMAC Tournament. The Lyons, who are the fifth-seed, will face-off against Wheaton, the fourth-seed at 3pm.
