Tennis Posts NEWMAC Victory Over Emerson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - A strong effort on Saturday powered the Mount Holyoke College tennis team to a 9-0 victory over Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. It was the first conference win for the Lyons, who improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC. The Lions are now 0-3 with an 0-2 conference mark.

MHC got things going in doubles action as senior captain Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) and sophomore Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) powered their way to an 8-6 victory in the first flight over senior Jana Winfield (Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) and Theresa Nelson (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury).

In the second flight, sophomore Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and junior Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational College) made it a 2-0 advantage for MHC with an 8-1 win over Marilia Rosario (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Visconde Porto Seguro) and Sarah Brennen-Athas. The Lyons won by default in the third flight.

Singles action saw Anischik defeat Winfield (6-0, 6-0) in the first flight, while sophomore Mira Murali (Fall City, Wash./American International School) was the victor in the second flight over Nelson (6-0, 6-0). Third singles saw Colas cruise past Rosario (6-0, 6-0), while in the fourth, Cai defeated Brennan-Athas (6-3, 6-0).

In the fifth flight, MHC first year Katherine Schumacher (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) downed McCarthy (6-0, 6-1), while Mount Holyoke earned a win by default in the sixth flight.
