Tennis Shoulders Tough Opener at Day 1 of Seven Sisters

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team shouldered a pair of tough losses to open day one of action at the 2015 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted by Smith College. The Lyons fell by a 5-0 margin to both #22 Vassar and Wellesley and move to 11-9 on the season.

In the opening match against the nationally-ranked Brewers, Mount Holyoke saw a hard-fought battle in the second singles match as senior Sarah Anischik shouldered a heartbreaking loss to Ava Sadeghi, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Junior Margaux Holloschutz suffered a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Kate Christensen in the first flight, while first year Ishita Tibrewal fell in the third flight to Winnie Yeates, 6-2, 6-0.

Doubles action saw Vassar's duo of Samantha Schapiro and Shayna Becker, defeat MHC's Alexa Colas and Amy Chen, 6-2, 6-0 at one, while the duo of Morgan Fitzgerald and Hanna McGuire defeated Mira Murali and Michelle Cai at two by a 6-0, 6-0 margin.

Game two against the Blue saw Anischik battle in another tough one at the second flight, falling to Carina Chen by a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 score. Holloschutz fell against Sojung Lee at one, 6-4, 6-0, while Tibrewal was defeated by Emily Olson, 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles, Colas and Chen shouldered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Samantha Stone and Dasha Kostikina, while Murali and Cai fell, 6-0, 6-0 to C. Dickensheets and Caroline Hsu.

The Lyons return to action on Sunday when they square off against Smith College. That match will take place at the MHC Field House at 9am. Mount Holyoke concludes competition at 1:30pm against Bryn Mawr.
