Tennis Suffers NEWMAC Loss at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's tennis team kept its win streak alive on Saturday afternoon as the Engineers defeated Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match. It was the second straight match in which the Engineers did not allow its opponent to score a point.

MIT (4-0, 4-0 NEWMAC) quickly took a 3-0 advantage in the contest, winning all three doubles matches. The Engineers got on the board when its No. 2 team of senior Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and first year Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) took an 8-2 decision over senior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn.) and sophomore Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii). MIT then completed the doubles sweep when its No. 1 pairing of sophomore Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and junior Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) took an 8-2 win over junior Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and first year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India).

MIT then went on to take all of the singles matches to complete the sweep of the Lyons. Tam took the first point in singles play, defeating Anischik in a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Kohrs then won the decisive fifth point of the day for the Engineers, winning her No. 1 matchup with Holloschutz by a final score of 6-0, 6-0.

Das wrapped things up for MIT at No. 3, scoring a 6-0, 6-3 win. Also picking up straight sets victories for the Engineers was sophomore Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) at No. 4, who handed Tibrewal her first loss of the season. Tibrewal entered the match with a 5-0 record. First year Cindy Liu (Claremont, Calif.) at No. 5 and sophomore Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) at No. 6 also posted wins.

MIT will return to action on Tuesday, September 23 when the Engineers will host Babson College in a NEWMAC match at 4:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke will also play on Tuesday, making the trip to Smith College for a 5:00 p.m. match.
