Tennis sweeps UMass-Boston to open season

BOSTON, Mass.—Mount Holyoke College (1-0) opened the 2014-15 season with a 9-0 victory over UMass Boston women's tennis (0-1) Saturday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.

Freshman Kristy Garcia and Martina Daelli both made their collegiate debuts for the Beacons, while Mount Holyoke used three new players in their season opener.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for UMass Boston on Opening Day, while the win marked the Lyons second-straight season-opening win over the Beacons and fourth consecutive overall.

Michelle Cai and Alexa Colas opened the match with an 8-0 victory over the Beacons' third doubles pair of Kathleen Conroy and Vicky Woyotwicz .

The Lyons stretched their lead out to 2-0, when Sarah Anischik and Amy Chen teamed up for another 8-0 win, over the Beacons second doubles pair of Kelsey Shea and Logan Smith.

UMass Boston's number one singles pair of Garcia and Daelli showed the most resistance in doubles, as the pair recovered from an early hole, to fall 8-4 to Margaux Holloschutz and Ishita Tibrewal

The Lyons carried their momentum over to singles play, as Colas earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Smith at number five singles, to extend the team's lead to 4-0.

Tibrewal clinched the victory for Mount Holyoke at number four singles, where she held off Shea 6-4, 6-1.

Holloschutz proved too much for Garcia at number one singles (6-0, 6-2), while her co-captain Anischik defeated Daelli 6-1, 6-1 at second singles.

In the final two singles matches of the day, Mira Murali downed Conroy 6-2, 6-1 and Cai held off Woytowicz 6-3, 6-1.

The Beacons will have a long lay-off, before returning to action September 10 when they host Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 p.m. The Lyons, however, return to action Monday when they host Simmons at the MHC Tennis Courts, starting at 1 p.m.
