Day One of Action at 2012 NEWITT Concludes for Lyons Tennis

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 12, 2012) - Day one of action at the 2012 New England Collegiate Tennis Tournament, hosted by Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, has concluded. Through the opening round, the Lyons tennis team has seen a number of student-athletes move on to the Second Round, including MHC's first, third and fourth teams.

Leading the way was senior Nahrhee Han and junior AnnElizabeth Konkel, who entered play as Mount Holyoke's #1 team. The pair played Salve Regina's Elizabeth DiFilippo and Karlee Walther, posting an 8-0 win in doubles.  Each then played a singles match with Han defeating Walther, 6-0, 6-0 and Konkel winning against DiFilippo, 6-2, 6-0. Han and Konkel will now play at 9am on Saturday in the MHC Field House.

Also moving on were the third team of first year Margaux Holloschutz and My-Linh Nguyen, who defeated Springfield's Erin Woodbury and Amy Buttarazzi by an 8-3 margin. Holloschutz then beat Woodbury, 6-2, 6-7, (7-5), (10-7), while Nguyen downed Buttarazzi, 6-0, 6-1. The pair will now play on Saturday at 12pm.

Mount Holyoke's final pair to move on to Saturday's match play at 12pm were juniors Maya Sayarath and Eman Malik, who defeated Simmons Rachel Sweeney and Kristi Crowley, 8-3 in doubles. Sayarath went on to beat Sweeney, 6-2, 6-1, while Malik was victorious over Crowley by a 6-0, 6-1 margin.

The Lyons second team of sophomore Jenni Lee and junior Kelsey Brower battled hard, but fell in doubles action to Roger Williams's Hillary Dutton and Adriana Maconachie, 8-1. Brower then defeated Dutton, 6-3, 1-6, (10-2), but Lee could not overcome Maconochie in singles, falling 6-0, 6-1 to give RWU the 2-1 win.

MHC's fifth pair of sophomore Sarah Anischik and first year Michelle Cai fell against Wheaton's Sarah Crom and Morgan Bell, 8-0 in doubles. Anischik went on to beat Bell, 6-1, 3-6 (10-5), but Cai was unable to overcome Crom, who won 6-0. 6-1.

Both the second and fifth teams for Mount Holyoke have the option to play in the consolation round on Saturday at Amherst College.

Action at this year's NEWITT event continues on Saturday. Consolation rounds will be held at Amherst as the weather permits.
