Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Recognition

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced its All-Academic Teams as well as its Scholar Athletes for the 2012-13 season. Six members of the Lyons squad were named Scholar-Athletes. In addition, the program picked up All-Academic Team accolades.

As a team, the Lyons, who are coached by Aldo Santiago, were recognized for the 10th straight season after posting a grade point average of 3.40. In total, it was the 11th time in the last 12 years that the team has earned All-Academic honors.

Individually, six student-athletes were named 2013 Scholar-Athletes by the organization including first year Michelle Cai, sophomores Sarah Anischik and Jenni Lee, juniors AnnElizabeth Konkel and Maya Sayarath, along with senior My-Linh Nguyen.

For Konkel and Sayarath, it marked their third straight Scholar-Athlete honors. It is also the second straight year for Anischik and Lee.

The Lyons posted an 11-9 record during the 2012-13 campaign, going 4-3 in NEWMAC play. Mount Holyoke advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament for the seventh consecutive season. Highlighting the year was first year Margaux Holloschutz, who was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team after posting a 14-3 record in singles and a 13-9 mark during doubles action.

Also receiving outstanding honors during the 2012-13 season was senior captain Nahrhee Han, who was awarded the prestigious Lindsay Morehouse Award, which is presented each year at NEWITT. The award acknowledges a senior player who signifies the ideals of sportsmanship, friendliness, character, fair play and hard work that Morehouse, a former standout at Williams College who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks, represented.

In order to earn Scholar-Athlete status, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter recipient, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their institution for at least two semesters. To qualify as an All-Academic Team, a program must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20.
