Tennis Falls at MIT in NEWMAC Action

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's tennis team]kept its NEWMAC record perfect at 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Mount Holyoke College on the DuPont/Katz Tennis Courts. Senior Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored the match-clinching win for MIT with a straight sets victory at No. 3 singles.

MIT (3-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) gained the early momentum in the contest with wins in all three doubles matches. The closest of the three was at the No. 1 flight where the MIT duo of junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) won 8-3 over Nahrhee Han/AnnElizabeth Konkel. The Engineers went on to take the No. 2 match, 8-2, and the No. 3 match, 8-1, to take the 3-0 lead into singles play.

There the match was decided quickly. Playing at No. 1, Quisenberry scored the first singles win for MIT with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Han. Wu then scored the clinching win in her No. 3 contest with Sarah Anischik, taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision. Sophomore Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) made it 6-0 in MIT's favor with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in the No. 2 match before Mount Holyoke (2-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) put what proved to be its only point on the board. The Lyons avoided the shutout when Margaux Holloschutz downed freshman Ava Soleimany (Newport Beach, Calif.) by a 7-5, 6-0 score.

Sophomore Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and junior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up the other wins for MIT. Dutt took a 6-0, 5-7, 10-4 win at No. 4, while Hsu stormed back in her No 5 match after dropping the first set to take a 3-6, 6-0, 10-1 decision.

MIT will step away from NEWMAC play next weekend when it hosts the ITA Regional Championships in Cambridge. The action will begin on Friday, Sept. 22 and continue through Sunday. Mount Holyoke will also play in the tournament in its next action.
