SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Despite a number of outstanding performances, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team fell to Trinity College, 130-104. Additionally, the Bantams men's team posted a 139-54 victory over the University of Rhode Island. Trinity moves to 3-3 on the season, while the homestanding Lyons are now 5-3.
MHC opened the meet with a strong win in the 200-medley relay. The foursome of senior Lauren Williams (Kingston, Jamaica/Baylor School (Tenn.), junior Maya Lazarovich (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington), sophomore Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap) and first year Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy) recorded a time of 1:54.46 for the victory.
Sophomore Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C./Ravencroft School) was the top individual winner, posting her first of three victories in the 1000-freestyle. In that event, she recorded a time of 10:43.25, over 15 seconds faster than the second-place finisher (11:00.76).
Pruden went on to win the 400-individual medley in a time of 4:30.24. That mark was just over two seconds away from her school record time, set in 2013 (4:28.92). Finally, she captured the 500-free in a time of 5:09.06, a mark that was again nearly 15 seconds faster than second-place (5:24.74).
Aban also claimed an individual win, touching the wall first in a time of 2:17.11. First year Emily Craig (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili Senior) also had a solid afternoon, placing third in the 200-free (2:04.30) and the 100-free (57.34).
Mount Holyoke returns to action this weekend when it travels to Vassar College to compete in the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship. The meet begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday. Both Trinity squads are back in the pool on Tuesday when they compete at Vassar at 4pm.
