Swimming & Diving Powers Past Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. – Powered by a number of outstanding efforts, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team posted a 158-128 victory at Simmons College on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. The dual meet victory moves the Lyons record to 5-2, while the homestanding Sharks are now 5-2 on the season.

The Lyons came out strong winning the 200-Medley Relay right from the start as the foursome of senior Lauren Williams (Kingston, Jamica), junior Maya Lazarovich (South Burlington, Vt.) and sophomores Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.) posted a time of 1:56.14.

Pruden led the Lyons with 18 individual points, winning the 200-free (1:58.36) and the 500-free (5:19.12). First year Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass.) followed up with a win in the 50-butterfly (27.26) and two second place finishes in the 100-free (58.02) and the 50-free (25.93) for 17 points.

Also posting a solid effort was junior Rui Nozaki (Rio Rancho, N.M.), who won the 1000-free (11:39.95), while Aban claimed victory in the 100-fly (1:01.31).

In the diving events, Mount Holyoke senior Holly Watson (Lexington, Mass.) swept victory on both boards, capturing the 1-meter by a score of 167.20 points. She won the 3-meter event with a mark of 169.15 points.

Although a hard day for the Sharks, Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.), Shylee Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) and Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) added five first place finishes to the Sharks score. Swisher took the victory in the 50-back, 100-back and the 50-freestyle with 27 individual points. Stewart finished first in the 50-breast and Collins finished first in the 100-free.

The Sharks return to the pool on Jan. 12 at St. Joseph's (Me.) at 1:00 p.m. before their final home meet again UMass Dartmouth Jan. 14. The Lyons return to action on Monday at the MHC Natatorium at 4pm. Mount Holyoke will battle the Trinity College women's team, while the Trinity men will face the men's squad from the University of Rhode Island.
