Swimming & Diving Excels on Day 1 of Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. - Powered by a number of outstanding finishes, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team currently sits fourth among nine competing teams at the 2013 Gompei Invitational, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Leading the way for the Lyons through day one is sophomore Cathleen Pruden, who captured individual victory in two events.

Pruden (Raleigh, North Carolina/Ravencroft School) won the 200-individual medley in a school record time of 2:09.63. That mark eclipsed her own record in the event, reset several weeks ago (2:11.36). She also went on to win the 500-freestyle in a time of 5:10.50.

Additionally, Pruden was third in the 50-free with a time of 25.38 and she helped the 800-freestyle relay and the 200-free relay to fourth and second, respectively. In the 800, the foursome, which also included junior Maya Lazarovich (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington), first year Emily Craig (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili Senior) and sophomore Erica Carvell (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley), posted a time of 8:21.02.

The 200-free relay team, which also included first year Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy), senior Lauren Williams (Kingston, Jamaica/Baylor School (Tenn.)) and sophomore Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap), recorded a time of 1:42.59.

Aban went on to finish second in the 100-butterfly with a mark of 1:00.92 and was also third in the 50-fly, posting a time of 27.03. Additionally, she was ninth in the 200-IM with a time of 2:24.08. Lazarovich also had a strong showing, placing 10th in the 200-IM (2:25.90), while also finishing ninth in the 100-breaststroke (1:13.63) and 10th in the 100-IM (1:08.49).

First year Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H./Bow) also had a solid effort, placing eighth in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:21.18.

Williams, Lazarovich, Aban and Craig closed out the meet for the Lyons in the 400-medley relay, finishing fourth overall with a time of 4:17.19.

MHC compiled 1055 points on the day. The host Engineers lead the women's standings with 1709.50 points, followed by Assumption (1504.50), Roger Williams (1170), MHC and Bentley (979) round out the top five.
