Swimming & Diving Rolls Past Westfield State

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Sophomore Bethany Aban had three victories to help lift the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team to a 167-125 win over Westfield State University on Saturday at the MHC Natatorium. With the win, the Lyons move to 2-1 in dual meet action thus far, while the Owls are now 0-2 on the young season.

Aban (Poulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap) opened the meet with a relay victory in the 200-medley event. The foursome, which also included senior Lauren Williams (Kingston, Jamaica/Baylor School (TN) and sophomores Sarah Crocker (Sacramento, Calif./C.K. McClatchy) and Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C./Ravencroft School), posted a time of 1:55.77.

She went on to win the 100-butterfly with a time of 1:01.12, while also touching the wall first in the 100-freestyle with a mark of 56.52.

Pruden was victorious in the 200-free with a time of 1:58.01. She also recorded a new school and pool record in the 100-Individual Medley, posting a mark of 1:02.16. Pruden swam exhibition in that event.

Junior Rui Nozaki (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho) won the 1000-free with a time of 11:57.99, while classmate Rachel Boynton (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) claimed victory in the 500-free with a time of 5:42.42.

Rounding out the solid efforts was sophomore Erica Carvell (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) and first year Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy). Carvell won the 50-butterfly with a time of 29.26, while Tyler claimed the 50-free with a mark of 25.87.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday in a 1pm match at Western Connecticut State. Westfield State is also in action next Saturday at Smith for a 1pm meet.
