Swimming & Diving Victorious in Season Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Powered by a number of multiple victory performances, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team opened its 2013-14 season with a 184-69 victory over the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday at the MHC Natatorium. Leading the way was sophomore Cathleen Pruden, who claimed wins in the 1000 free and the 200 back events.

Pruden (Raleigh, N.C./Ravencroft School) posted a time of 10:40.99 to win the 1000-freestyle event and went on to touch the wall in a time of 2:14.60 in the 200-backstroke. Junior Maya Lazarovich (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) also performed well in the opener, winning the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:02.77. She also posted a victory in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:34.64.

Sophomore Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap) won the 200-butterfly in a time of 2:22.07 and also swam the third leg of the victorious 200-medley relay team, which won in a time of 2:00.66. Other members of the relay included junior Rachel Boynton (Northampton, Mass./Northampton), sophomore Sarah McKay (Newton, Mass./Newton North High School) and first year Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy).

Tyler also went on to win her first individual collegiate event, capturing the 50-freestyle in a time of 26.20. First year Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H./Bow) won the 50-backstroke with a mark of 31.31, while fellow rookie Emily Craig (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili Senior High School) captured the 100-freestyle with a mark of 57.52.

Other top performances included those from sophomores Erica Carvell (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) and Sarah Crocker (Sacramento, Calif./C.K. McClatchy), along with first year Holly Watson (Lexington, Mass./Lexington). Carvell swam to victory in the 500-free, recording a time of 5:40.47, while Crocker won the 50-breast with a time of 34.50. Watson went on to win the 1-meter diving event with a score of 148.30.
