Swimming & Diving Finishes 4th at WPI's Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team exceled in the final day of action at the 2013 Gompei Invitational, finishing fourth overall. The event, which featured nine women's teams, was hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Sophomore Cathleen Pruden led the way once again, recording multiple NCAA B Cuts in Sunday's 400-IM competition.

Pruden (Raleigh, North Carolina/Ravencroft School) captured victory in her signature event, the 400-individual medley, recording an NCAA B Cut time of 4:35.54. It marked her second B cut of the day, as she had recorded a time of 4:33.45 in the preliminary morning session.

Additionally, Pruden was third in the 200-freestyle, recording a mark of 2:00.43. Junior Maya Lazarovich (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) also had an outstanding day, placing ninth in the same event with a time of 2:07.61. She also finished sixth in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:34.17 while also helping the 200-medley relay team to fourth in a time of 1:54.94.

Other members of the relay team included senior Lauren Williams (Kingston, Jamaica/Baylor School (Tenn.)), sophomore Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap) and first year Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy).

Aban also helped contribute to the Lyons solid performance on an individual scale, placing sixth in the 50-backstroke (30.13) and eighth in both the 100-free (57.34) and the 200-butterfly (2:24.13).

The final event of the meet saw the foursome of Aban, first year Emily Craig (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili Senior), Lazarovich and Pruden finish second overall in the 400-free relay. The group posted a time of 3:47.38.

MHC compiled 2004 points in the meet. The host Engineers won the meet with 3,357.5 points, followed by Assumption (2937.5), Roger Williams (2098), MHC and Bentley (1903) round out the top five.

The Lyons are now idle for the holiday break, but return to action on January 10 when they host Wheaton and Clark for a tri-meet at the MHC Natatorium. The meet begins at 1pm.
