SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 25, 2011) – Senior forward Shara Robertson and first year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn recorded two goals apiece to lead the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team to a convincing 6-0 triumph over Westfield State University this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field.
Robertson also chipped in with two assists for the Lyons, who ran their win streak to three. With her two tallies tonight, the forward tied Krista Lindquist '02 as the program's all-time leader in career goals scored with 60. She is just one point shy of tying Lindquist's record of 143 career points.
Mount Holyoke got on the board with a perfectly executed penalty corner two minutes into the contest. After an injection by Robertson and a stick stop by senior defender Tricia Chase, Kilburn ripped a shot past senior goalkeeper Amanda McCarthy from the top of the circle.
The Lyons extended their cushion to 2-0 at the 24:26 mark, when junior defender Stephanie Pascual buried her fourth penalty stroke of the season.
Just under six minutes later, they pushed their lead to 3-0 on Robertson's first tally of the night. Junior Angelica Pascual set up the goal with a pinpoint pass to the middle of the circle.
Mount Holyoke scored three more times over a span of 13 minutes in the second half to put things away.
Sophomore forward Stephanie Slysz got the rally started with her eighth goal of the year at the 56:12 mark. First year midfielder Aurora Rougeau was credited with the assist on the play after her long feed from the right side made its way to Slysz in the middle of the circle.
Kilburn took advantage of another penalty corner to put the Lyons in front 5-0 just over five minutes later. This time, she scored directly off Robertson's injection. It was the rookie's 13th goal of the fall.
The icing on the cake came from Robertson, who closed out the scoring with her 18th goal of the year in the final minute of regulation. After scooping up a loose ball, she beat McCarthy from close range.
Mount Holyoke finished with overwhelming advantages in both shots (32-3) and corners (20-2).
Senior goalkeeper Katie Gibson needed to save just one shot to secure her fifth shutout of the year and 17th of her outstanding career.
At the other end, McCarthy turned away 11 shots for the Owls.
Mount Holyoke (11-4, 5-2 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when entertains the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 6:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Westfield State (10-6, 5-5 LEC) will close out its regular season with a Little East Conference showdown at Salem State University on Saturday at noon.
