Mount Holyoke Rolls Past Regis in 2011 Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 8, 2011) – Senior forwards Shara Robertson and Jess Fajardo posted three goals apiece, as the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team rolled to a 12-1 triumph over Regis College this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the fourth year in a row that the Lyons prevailed in their season opener.

Jess Fajardo Seven players recorded goals for Mount Holyoke, which reached double digits in the scoring column for just the fourth time in program history. In 2008, the Lyons exploded for a school record 16 goals in a rout of Elms College. Prior to that, they lit up the scoreboard for 10 goals in wins over Bryn Mawr College and WPI in 2001.

First year forward Christine Ianni opened the flood gates with her first collegiate goal at the 18:56 mark. She went on to score one more time before the break, as the hosts built a 5-0 edge. Fajardo also found the back of the cage twice in the first half.

Mount Holyoke poured it on in the second stanza, piling up seven more goals. Two of those came from Robertson, whose hat trick was the seventh of her outstanding career. The Lyons' remaining tallies came from first year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn, junior defender Stephanie Pascual, first year forward Gretchen Rowe and first year forward Caitlyn Brooks. Fajardo also scored once in the second half to complete her first career hat trick.

The lone Regis goal came from first year forward Cheyenne Genga at the 37:17 mark.

Mount Holyoke finished with overwhelming advantages in both shots (26-4) and penalty corner opportunities (13-4). Senior goalkeeper Katie Gibson made three saves for the hosts. At the other end, sophomore Morgan Mitchell turned away eight shots.

Both squads will resume play on the road on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (1-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will visit Castleton State College at 1:00 p.m., while Regis (0-2, 0-0 NECC) will travel to Thomas College for a match beginning at noon.
