Kilburn Buries a Pair to Lead Field Hockey Past WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 18, 2011) – First year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn recorded a pair of second half goals to push the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team to a 4-1 triumph over WPI this evening in NEWMAC action at Alumni Field. With the win, the Lyons rebounded from a tough 3-2 setback at first place MIT on Saturday.

Kirstin Kilburn First year forward Christine Ianni kicked off the scoring at the 20:31 mark, when she tipped in a shot by senior midfielder Taylor Hedges for her seventh goal of the season.

Mount Holyoke extended its cushion to 2-0 on a goal by junior Angelica Pascual with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. After gaining possession in her own defensive end, the speedy forward raced all the way down the left sideline and beat sophomore goalkeeper Liz Dufresne.

WPI (8-6, 2-4 NEWMAC) climbed backed into the match with a perfectly executed penalty corner after time had expired in the opening period.  Senior midfielder Danielle Antonellis drilled a laser into the top left corner following an injection by junior forward Megan Read and a stick stop by senior forward Celena Dopart.

From there, it was all Mount Holyoke. Kilburn scored both of her goals off of penalty corner sets midway through the second stanza. In both instances, she collected entry passes from senior forward Shara Robertson and rifled shots past Dufresne. Her goals were separated by less than eight minutes. The rookie has now found the back of the cage 11 times this season.

The Lyons finished with advantages in both shots (17-9) and corners (13-5). Senior goalkeeper Katie Gibson came up with two saves for the guests. Meanwhile, Dufresne stopped seven shots for WPI.

Mount Holyoke (9-4, 4-2 NEWMAC) will kick off a three-match homestand against Clark University on Saturday. The contest is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
