Gibson Picks Up NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week Honors

Katie Gibson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Goalkeeper Katie Gibson has been named NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week after leading Mount Holyoke College to a perfect 2-0 week with her stellar play between the pipes. The senior turned away 20 shots in wins over Regis College and Castleton State College.

Gibson was at her best on Saturday, when she racked up a career best 17 saves in her team's 2-1 triumph over Castleton State. Over the course of the afternoon, she surrendered just one goal despite constant pressure from the Spartans. The Lyons were able to overcome a 33-13 deficit in the shot column, largely due to the fact that Gibson repeatedly came up with spectacular stops.

The senior also collected three saves in Mount Holyoke's 12-1 victory over Regis College on Thursday.

No stranger to NEWMAC accolades, Gibson earned Second Team All-Conference honors last fall. In addition to leading the NEWMAC with a goals against average of 1.37, her save percentage of .810 was also good for tops in the league. She has registered 12 career shutouts. Gibson was also named to the NFHCA Division III New England East Second Team last year.

The Lyons (2-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Wesleyan University for a non-conference tilt beginning at 7:00 p.m.
