SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 20, 2011) – Led by senior forward Shara Robertson, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Western New England University this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. With her two goals, Robertson gained sole possession of second place on the Lyons' all-time scoring list. The forward surpassed Jaimie Macari and needs just 10 more to reach Krista Lindquist's record of 60.
Robertson got Mount Holyoke on the board just 2:08 into the contest, when she collected a touch pass from sophomore forward Stephanie Slysz and scored from the doorstep. First midfielder Aurora Rougeau got the play started with a long feed from the right side to Slysz, who found Robertson wide open on the left post.
Slysz scored one of her own at the 15:01 mark. After gaining control of a loose ball, she slotted a shot past Western New England junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall from the middle of the circle.
The Lyons scored three more times in the second half to put things away.
First year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn extended the cushion to 3-0 just over a minute into the stanza, when she scooped up a loose ball off a scramble in front of the cage and knocked a shot over Hall's shoulder.
Classmate Christine Ianni took advantage of a penalty corner opportunity to put Mount Holyoke in front 4-0 at the 45:16 mark. Slysz set up the goal with a long pass from the left side that made its way past Hall to a streaking Ianni, who guided the ball into the cage.
Robertson then used a long pass from Rougeau to cap things off. It was her eighth goal of the year and 50th of her career.
Mount Holyoke finished with overwhelming advantages in both shots (30-8) and corners (19-3).
Senior goalkeeper Katie Gibson made three saves en route to her first shutout of the year and 13th of her career. Kilburn and junior Stephanie Pascual each made defensive saves to preserve the shutout. At the other end, Hall came up with 11 stops for the Golden Bears.
The Lyons have now outscored their opponents 29-4, including 14-0 in their last two outings.
Mount Holyoke (4-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) will resume its NEWMAC slate on Saturday, when it hosts Wellesley College at 1:00 p.m. Western New England (2-5, 1-0 TCCC) is set to entertain Clark University on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
