Fajardo Secures Lyon of the Week Award

Jess Fajardo Senior Jess Fajardo has earned the Lyon of the Week Award for the week of October 3-9 after leading the field hockey team to convincing wins over Nichols College and Babson College. The forward scored three goals and accounted for nine of her team's 63 shots.

Fajardo was at her best on Saturday, when she knocked in a pair of goals in Mount Holyoke's 5-0 triumph over Babson. After scoring what proved to be the winner off an assist from first year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn at the 11:08 mark, she tacked on one more goal in the waning minutes. Her second tally of the day capped off a wild flurry that included three shots and two saves. The ball eventually made its way to sophomore forward Stephanie Slysz, who set up the goal with a short pass from the right side.

Four days earlier, the Lyons rolled to a 4-0 victory at Nichols. Fajardo scored their third goal of the day just over 10 minutes into the second half. After corralling a loose ball in front, she slipped a shot past Molly Melanson from point blank range.

Fajardo has been one of Mount Holyoke's most dangerous offensive weapons this season. In 10 matches, the forward has exploded for 11 goals and one assist. Over the course of her career, she had totaled 54 points on 23 goals and eight assists.

The Lyons (7-3, 3-1 NEWMAC) will return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Simmons College for a non-conference contest beginning at 6:00 p.m.
