NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College cross country team finished in the top half of the conference Saturday at the NEWMAC Championships, placing sixth out of 12 teams with an outstanding team effort.

The Lyons scored 194 points, 10 points ahead of seventh-place Springfield and 22 ahead of eighth-place Salve Regina. MIT won the team title with 35 points, with Coast Guard (47), WPI (65), Smith (123) and Wellesley (130) rounding out the top five.

"We had a great day," said head coach Jay Hartshorn. "We knew from visiting the course that we wanted to save something for the last loop, and see if we could be more aggressive at the end of the race. We did a really good job with that and moved up a ton in the last kilometer. That was probably the difference between sixth and eighth place for us."

Junior Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) finished 22nd out of 118 runners to lead the Lyons, covering Smith College's 6-kilometer course in 24:45.3.

Senior Bridget Hall (Arlington, Mass.) crossed the finish line next for Mount Holyoke in 38th place (25:22.9), followed in the scoring by junior Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.) in 44th (25:28.6), junior Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) in 51st (25:54.7), and sophomore Katie Earle (East Kingston, N.H.) in 64th place (26:51.7).

The scoring displacers for the Lyons were first-year Anita Konopka (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) in 68th place (27:15.5) and first-year Jane Miller-Arsenault (Middlesex, Vt.) in 82nd (27:46.1).

Mount Holyoke placed sixth out of 11 teams at the 2022 NEWMAC Championships, with the great benefit of a second-place overall finish by now-graduated standout Lauren Selkin.

Mount Holyoke will next compete at the NCAA Mideast Region Championships on Nov. 11 at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.
