Track & Field Excels at Smith College Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - It was an outstanding effort on Saturday as the Mount Holyoke College track & field team competed at the 2018 Smith College Outdoor Invitational. It was a non-team scoring event, but the Lyons saw a number of solid performances, including 10 top-ten finishes across a number of events.

In the opening race, first year Tamara Mukulu took ninth overall, finishing the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.61. The 200-meter dash soon after saw sophomore Charleen Theroux cross the line sixth overall with a mark of 26.64, while in the 800-meter dash, MHC first year Simone Jacob powered her way to fifth overall with a time of 2:32.67.

The Lyons saw several strong efforts in the 1500-meter race, led by junior Emsie Cronin who was ninth with a time of 5:29.79. Sophomore Brigit Wolf crossed in a time of 5:39.34 to take 14th in the event, while classmate Michelle Serrano was close behind in 15th with a mark of 5:40.35.

Sophomore Emma Raney (pictured) excelled in the 5,000-meter run, posting second overall with a time of 19:29.55. In the 400-meter hurdles, first year Olivia Wrobleski was eighth with a time of 1:22.68, while senior Julia Criscione was 10th, posting a time of 1:29.84.

In the relay events, the Lyons were strong once again as the 4x100 relay team of Theroux and first years Isabelle Wohlin, Ireland Clare Kennedy and Mukulu finished third with a mark of 53.95. The 4x400 relay squad was runner-up, crossing the line in 4:31.04 and comprised of Jacob, Theroux, Cronin and Wrobleski.

Junior Julia Hecking took home the victory in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 38.45 meters (126-02), while Clare Kennedy was sixth overall in the javelin with a throw of 27.02 meters (88-08).

Mount Holyoke is back in action on Saturday when it hosts the Spring Fling Invitational at the MHC Track & Turf Field. The meet will begin at 10am.
