Swimming and diving takes fifth at RIT invite as Sewell wins both diving events

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Maddy Sewell took first place in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving to lead the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team to fifth place at the Don Richards Invitational, which concluded Saturday at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Mount Holyoke scored 344 points to easily outpace William Smith (223) for fifth place among seven competing teams at the meet. Host RIT won with 1,017, followed by Skidmore (698), St. Lawrence (621), Clarkson (408), Mount Holyoke (344), William Smith (223), and Bard (81).

Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored 409.15 points in 1-meter diving, outscoring runner-up Kay Oliver of RIT by 9.65 points for first place out of eight competitors. She later scored 415.45 points in 3-meter diving, outdistancing Oliver by 9.35 points for first place.

The Lyons had several other outstanding performances at the meet, getting team points from the following individuals:

  • First-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) took second place out of 22 competitors in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:00.26, .01 ahead of third-place Gretchen Gwitt of Skidmore and .27 seconds behind first-place Lizzie Day of Skidmore.
  • Junior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) placed sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with a time of 19:12.87. Williams was also eighth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:03.14 and ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.92), scoring a combined 33 team points in those three events.
  • First-year Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) took ninth place in both the the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.72) and the 200 fly (2:26.90).
  • Junior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) placed 11th in the 200 breast (2:42.69) and 12th in the 200 butterfly (2:36.41).
  • Junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.) placd 12th in the 100-yard freestyle (58.28 seconds) and 15th in the 50 free (26.40).
  • Senior captain Anais Magner (Whakatane, New Zealand) placed 12th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.04).
  • Sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) placed 13th out of 26 swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.59. Schneider was also 16th (26.43) in the 50-yard freestyle.
  • Sophomore Emily Tarinelli (Groton, Conn.) placed 13th in the 200 butterfly (2:38.30).
  • Junior Seran Goudsouzian (Hellertown, Pa.) placed 14th in the 200 butterfly (2:48.30).

Mount Holyoke will next compete on Jan. 11 in a tri-meet with Vassar College at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
