SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team fell behind 3-0 and stayed in the game the rest of the way, never trailing by more than six goals, but the Lyons couldn't come all the way back Wednesday night at Clark University, falling 16-11 in the season finale for both teams.

Mount Holyoke finishes the season 3-12 overall and 0-9 in NEWMAC play, while Clark improved to 5-10, 2-7 NEWMAC. The game marked the first meeting in women's lacrosse between the schools.

First-year midfielder Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) scored five goals on seven shots and added nine draw controls to cap an outstanding rookie season. Bisson finishes the year with 48 goals, tied for the 15th-most in a season by a Lyon, 68 points, tying for 11th-most in team history, and 60 draw controls, ninth-highest in team history.

Sophmore Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) scored three goals and junior Hannah Bisson (South Hadley, Mass.) added two goals and an assist. First-year Amelia Knaysi (Grand Junction, Colo.) had five draw controls and three ground balls, and sophomore goalie Emma Tower (Dover, N.H.) made 13 saves.

After falling behind 3-0 early, Emi Bisson's unassisted goal and a score by Phillips, assisted by first-year Marielle Welch (Silver Spring, Md.), closed the Lyons within a goal of the Cougars. Mount Holyoke would come within a goal of Clark on three more occasions in the game, at 5-4, 6-5, and 8-7, but couldn't pull even.

Clark went ahead 15-9 despite a player disadvantage on Kiley Simmons' goal with 10:01 left in the fourth quarter. Mount Holyoke made a final push with Emi Bisson and Phillips scoring back-to-back goals at the 7:56 and 6:42 marks to close within four (15-11), but Clark held Mount Holyoke scoreless the rest of the way. Elizabeth Liakos added her fifth goal of the game with 2:19 to go.

Statistics underscored the closeness of the matchup, with the host Cougars holding slight edges in shots (34-29) and turnovers (21-25), while the Lyons won 16 of 30 draws. Clark was 4-of-6 on free-position shots to Mount Holyoke's 4-11 rate.
