Coast Guard defeats lacrosse despite Knaysi's big game

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The U.S. Coast Guard Academy took control early and registered a 17-3 NEWMAC women's lacrosse victory over the Mount Holyoke College Lyons on Wednesday night, despite an excellent game from first-year midfielder Amelia Knaysi.

Knaysi scored two goals and had season highs of three caused turnovers and seven ground balls for the Lyons (3-10, 0-7 NEWMAC).

Coast Guard (10-4, 6-1 NEWMAC) earned big advantages in draw controls (20-4) and shots (33-7); in the first quarter, the difference was 13-1 in shots and 9-0 in draw controls.

Coast Guard put the first five goals of the game on the scoreboard before Knaysi (Grand Junction, Colo.) got the Lyons on the scoreboard with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter. The host Bears regained a five-goal lead with Gianna Cascio's goal with two seconds left in the quarter, then outscored Mount Holyoke 6-0 in the second quarter to take full control of the game.

Abby McAllister and Sarah Skurat scored three goals apiece for Coast Guard, while Laine Weber and Caitlyn Coates added two goals apiece.

First-year midfield Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) also scored for Mount Holyoke, her 40th goal of the season, continuing her streak of scoring at least one goal in each of her games this season. Bisson ranked sixth in the NEWMAC in goals at the start of the day.

Sophomore Emma Tower (Dover, N.H.) made 12 saves in goal and collected four ground balls for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke plays its final home game this Saturday at 1pm against Wellesley.
