Basketball Tripped-Up By Coast Guard in NEWMAC Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Four players laid down double-figures to lift the Coast Guard Academy to victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday evening. With the 86-21 win, the Bears improve to 4-10 and are now 3-3 in conference play. The Lyons slip to 0-14 and 0-6 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard was paced by Kyra Hartman, who poured in 19 points and added three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Brenna Farrington came in off the bench to post 13 points and a game-best 10 rebounds for the double-double. Micaela Martinelli added 11 points with four boards, three assists and two steals, while Laura Irish also came off the bench to post 10 points and five caroms.

For Mount Holyoke, both Annika Brooks and Katlyn Grover posted seven points, with Brooks adding six rebounds and three steals. Mikayla McEwen came off the bench to add four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a game-high two blocks.

The Bears offense was on full display in the opening two quarters as Hartman notched 13 of her 19 points in the first 10 minutes. Coast Guard saw a wide distribution of points in the second stanza as Wood posted seven points, aided by buckets from four other players. The defensive effort was in high effect for the visitors, who held the homestanding Lyons to just six points.

In the third quarter, Martinelli led the way for the Bears, throwing down eight points on a 4-of-5 effort from the floor, while Julia Guerrero posted four points and three boards with two steals. The Lyons got four of their six points off the hands of Grover in the frame.

The final quarter saw Farrington take charge for CGA, posting all 13 of her points in the frame. Four different MHC players found the net in the frame, but Coast Guard capitalized on a 16-4 advantage in steals, along with a 50-27 rebounding margin for the win.

Both teams return to NEWMAC action on Saturday as Mount Holyoke travels to Emerson (1pm), while Coast Guard hosts Babson (1pm).
