Basketball Suffers NEWMAC Loss at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College head women's basketball coach Melissa Hodgdon picked up her 200th career win on Saturday afternoon as the Lyons defeated Mount Holyoke, 73-22, in Emerson Gymnasium in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.

The win improves Wheaton to 12-6 on the year and 5-4 in conference action. Mount Holyoke falls to 0-17 overall and 0-9 in the NEWMAC.

Kiley Shoemaker led all players with 17 points on an 8-11 night from the floor, while also pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Oppie Morris also finished with a double-double, netting 13 points and pulling down 11 boards. Rebecca Arnone ended the contest with 13 points after shooting 5-10 from the floor.

Leah Hodges led the visiting Lyons, coming off the bench to post eight points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Genelle Green knocked down seven with four rebounds, an assist and three steals. Xajaah Williams-Flores finished with a team-high six rebounds.

After trailing by a 21-7 margin following the opening quarter, MHC battled back into it, trailing just 24-11 on a bucket by Hodges with 6:56 to play in the second frame. A jumper by Williams-Flores helped to keep it close, but Wheaton went on a 12-0 run to close out the frame and send the home team into intermission with a 38-13 advantage.

MHC grabbed a couple of quick buckets in the early going of the third as both Green and Hodges connected, but another strong 14-0 run by the Lyons closed out the quarter with strong momentum for Wheaton.

In the final quarter, Wheaton took advantage of shots at the line, scoring five of its 19 points at the free throw mark. Both Shoemaker and Arnone added four points apiece as well to close out the contest.

Wheaton returns to the court on Wednesday, traveling to Clark for a 7pm game. Mount Holyoke is also in action on Wednesday, hosting WPI at 7pm.
