Basketball Suffers NEWMAC Loss to Emerson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Emerson College used a 20-point performance from Charlie Boyle to take a 56-38 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium, Saturday.

Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley) came off the Lions' bench and led all scorers as she went 7-of-12 from the field. She narrowly missed out on a double-double, as she also picked up nine rebounds. The first-year forward was also 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in 25 minutes.

With the win, Emerson improves to 5-9 overall with a 3-5 record in conference play, while Mount Holyoke falls to 0-15 (0-7 NEWMAC).

The only other Lion in double figures was sophomore guard Eastin Ashby (Pittson, Pa./Pittston Area), who had 11 points. Sophomore forward Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) grabbed nine rebounds for Emerson, who had a 46-33 edge on the boards.

Mount Holyoke was led by senior guard Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn./Miss Porter's School) and junior Xajaah Williams-Flores (The Bronx, N.Y./Holderness School), who had 10 points apiece. Williams-Flores also led the Lyons with nine rebounds, while Green added three assists and four steals. Senior Kelly Stewart (La Cañada, Calif./La Cañada) added nine points for the Lyons.

Emerson led throughout the contest, using an early 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead after the first quarter. Two free throws by Green cut the lead to 14-10 midway through the second, but Emerson closed the half on a 10-3 run and took a 27-13 edge into halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, the Lyons used a 9-2 run - bookended by a pair of baskets by Stewart - to trim the margin to 38-28, but they could draw no closer and Emerson led 44-29 after three quarters.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Wednesday, as they visit area-rival Smith for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Emerson is also back on the floor this Wednesday, as they host Babson at 7:30 p.m.
