SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Senior forward Chelsi Scott posted a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead Wellesley College to a 41-26 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Blue improve to 4-17 overall and 2-12 in conference play. The Lyons are now 0-22 and 0-14 in the NEWMAC.
Scott (Portland, Mich./Portland) led all players in both scoring and rebounding on the afternoon, while also adding a game-high three blocks and three steals. She shot 5-of-8 from the floor and was 3-of-4 from the line as well. Sophomore guard Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, Calif./Milton Academy) posted nine points with a game-best five assists, adding a block and three steals, while classmate and fellow guard Chelsea Brown (San Jose, Calif./Pioneer) had a game-high four steals.
For Mount Holyoke, senior forward Siyao Sui (Shenzhen, China/St. Mary's School (N.C.) had eight points with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal. Classmate and guard Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn./Miss Porter's School) had seven points and nine assists to go along with three steals, while sophomore guard Peyton Burr (Fayston, Vt./Harwood Union) had seven points, three boards and an assist.
Wellesley came out strong in the opening quarter, grabbing a 13-6 lead through the first 10 minutes. Pacing the effort for the Blue were a pair of three pointers in the opening two minutes by sophomore guard Anna Cahill (New London, N.H./Kearsarge).
In the second stanza the Lyons battled back after falling behind by 11 (20-9) on a three from Jang at 6:14. Burr nailed a layup and would add another make in the final 12 seconds to send Wellesley into halftime with a 22-13 advantage.
A jumper from Sui to open the third cut down the lead to seven (22-15) for the visitors, but Wellesley countered as junior forward Ailis Hanley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) sank a layup, while Scott added back-to-back shots to push the visitors to their largest lead of the game (32-17).
Wellesley continued to press in the fourth quarter, going on a 6-0 run to grab a 41-20 lead. The Lyons got a pair of free throw makes from Sui and a pair of shots from the line by junior guard Xajaah Williams-Flores (The Bronx, N.Y./Holderness School) to close out the scoring.
Both teams continue NEWMAC action on Wednesday at 7pm as Mount Holyoke hosts Springfield College for Senior Night, while Wellesley welcomes Smith College.
