Scecina To Be Inducted Into Springfield College Athletics Hall of Fame

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT BY SPRINGFIELD

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Springfield College Athletics Department has announced its selections into its 2016 Hall of Fame and Mount Holyoke College head basketball coach Michelle Scecina is among five inductees into this year's class. A former basketball standout for the Pride, Scecina is in her 12th season with the Lyons basketball program and is also a member of the faculty for physical education.

The year's class will be formally inducted in a ceremony on April 9, 2016.

A four year starter at Springfield, Scecina graduated and remains the school's all-time leading rebounder (1,007) and also reached the 1,000 point plateau (1,109 career points). She was an ECAC All-Region Team honoree as a junior in 1995-96 and was named to the NEWBA Senior All-Star Team in 1996-97.

Following her tenure at Springfield, Scecina served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, where she helped lead the Pride to the NCAA Division III Tournament Regional Semifinals in 2002 and the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2001.

Scecina, who served as an assistant at Mount Holyoke for two seasons (2002-04), was named head coach of the Lyons in 2004-05. She earned NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Lyons to their first ever NEWMAC Championship in 2006-07. With their 51-46 triumph over WPI in the league title game, they secured a spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the first time in program history.

In 2005-06, Scecina guided Mount Holyoke to a 72-68 victory over perennial powerhouse Emmanuel College in the ECAC Division III New England Championship. With the win, the Lyons established a new program record for wins in a season with 23. As a first year head coach, Scecina directed Mount Holyoke to the NEWMAC regular season title in 2004-05.

Scecina, who is also the co-President of the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), has posted 116 wins since taking over the reins in 2004. The Lyons are 116-166 under her guidance, having made five appearances in the NEWMAC Tournament during that span.

In addition to her coaching duties at Mount Holyoke, Scecina teaches a number of different classes in the Department of Physical Education. She is also an American Red Cross certified instructor in water safety, life guarding, CPR and community first aid.

Scecina earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in physical education from Springfield in 1997, she went on to earn her Master of Education Degree in health studies from the College in 2001.
