Tennis Drops Pivotal NEWMAC Match at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. (Oct. 8, 2011) – With a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament at stake, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team fell 8-1 at Wheaton College this afternoon. As a result, the Lyons must now defeat Springfield College in order to qualify for their eighth straight trip to the postseason. They will host the Pride on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

Wheaton (5-2, 3-2 NEWMAC) was paced by sophomore Lyndsay Cooke, first year Alexandra Marlowe, senior Allesandra DiOrio and sophomore Sarah Crom, who each prevailed at both singles and doubles.

The hosts got on the board with a pair of doubles victories. Cooke and Marlowe collected an 8-4 win at the top of the lineup, while DiOrio and Crom came out on top 8-3 in the number two slot.

Mount Holyoke's (3-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) lone point of the day came from its number three doubles tandem of sophomore Kelsey Brower and senior Heather Richardson, who recorded an 8-4 victory.

From there, it was all Wheaton. The hosts secured wins in all six singles matches to ice things. Their lineup featured Cooke, Marlowe, DiOrio, sophomore Morgan Bell, Crom and junior Jesse Boggis.

Cooke, DiOrio, Crom and Boggis each won in straight sets.

Marlowe dropped the first set of her number two match against sophomore Maya Sayarath before rebounding for a 2-6, 6-1, (10-8) triumph. Meanwhile, Bell edged sophomore Eman Malik 6-3, 4-6, (10-5) in her number four tilt.
