MIT Trips Up Tennis

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 24, 2011) – Michelle Dutt, Juana Becerra and Vynnie Kong won at both singles and doubles to lead the MIT tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. With the win, the Engineers remained perfect in NEWMAC play this season.

Maya Sayarath and AnnElizabeth Konkel prevailed in their respective singles matches for the Lyons. Meanwhile, Heather Richardson and Kelsey Brower won for the second consecutive time at number three doubles.

MIT collected wins in two of the three doubles matches to set the tone early. Dutt and Julia Hsu got things going with an 8-3 triumph at the top of the lineup. After Richardson and Brower evened things up with an 8-4 win, Kong and Becerra came out on top 8-2 in their number two tilt.

Kong and Becerra quickly put the Engineers in front 4-1 by winning their singles matches in straight sets.

Refusing to go away, Mount Holyoke sliced the deficit to 4-3 thanks to wins by Sayarath and Konkel. Sayarath downed Hsu 6-4, 6-2 at the number two position for her second win in a row and fourth of the season. Meanwhile, Konkel topped Alexandria Hall 6-4, 0-6, 6-0 for her third triumph of the fall.

From there, Dutt and Hillary Jenny prevailed in straight sets to close things out for the Engineers.

Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (1-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) is slated to visit longtime rival Smith College for a match beginning at 5:30 p.m. Meanwhile, MIT (3-1, 3-0 NEWMAC) will host Babson College at 4:00 p.m.
