Tennis Falls to Babson in First NEWMAC Match

BABSON PARK, Mass. (Sept. 10, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to Babson College this afternoon at the Farwell Tennis Courts. It was the NEWMAC opener for both squads. Nahrhee Han, AnnElizabeth Konkel and Maya Sayarath figured in on points for the Lyons.

Rebecca Stone, Minte Tamoshunas and Monica Mercer each prevailed at both singles and doubles to set the tone for Babson.

The Beavers grabbed the early lead with a pair of doubles victories. Stone and Tamoshunas paired up for an 8-3 win at the number two spot, while Mercer and Ashley Lake came out on top 8-5 in their number three tilt. Han and Konkel kept Mount Holyoke in the match with an impressive 8-6 triumph in their number one match against Sarah Whitaker and Alex Freeman. After falling behind early, the duo rallied back to get the Lyons on the board.

Babson put things away with five singles wins. Stone, Mercer, Freeman and Mikaela Stamas won in straight sets for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke's lone point came from Sayarath, who prevailed 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in her number two contest. The Lyons also received a strong performance from Konkel, who took Tamoshunas to three sets at the fifth slot before falling 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, (10-6).

Mount Holyoke (1-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) is slated to visit Simmons College on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
