SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 21, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke tennis team fell 7-2 to non-conference foe Wesleyan University this evening at the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex Field House. Heather Richardson, Kelsey Brower and Maya Sayarath each contributed points for the Lyons.

Wesleyan was paced by Grace Smith, Lauren Jacobs and Kiley Robbins, who each came out on top in both singles and doubles.

The Cardinals gained control of the match with a pair of doubles victories.

Smith and Jacobs got things started with an 8-2 win at the number two slot. After Richardson and Brower evened the score with an 8-2 triumph of their own at the number three position, Wesleyan's number one duo of Robbins and Sarah Miller held on for a 9-7 victory over Nahrhee Han and AnnElizabeth Konkel. They led 6-0 in the match before Han and Konkel staged a furious comeback to slice the deficit and eventually force extra play.

Wesleyan then took five of the six singles points to close things out.

Smith, Robbins, Jacobs, Kaitlyn Clark and Hannah Berkman each prevailed in straight sets for the Cardinals.

Mount Holyoke's lone point came from Sayarath, who won the first set of her number two tilt 6-4 before her opponent retired in the second set.

The Lyons (1-4, 0-1 NEWMAC) will resume their NEWMAC slate at home against MIT on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Wesleyan (3-1, 0-1 NESCAC) is scheduled to visit Roger Williams University for a non-conference match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
