EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Winter conditions at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships exacted a toll on Mount Holyoke College senior Lauren Selkin, who did not finish the race in her second trip to nationals after losing a shoe during the second mile.

Running in 9-degree wind chills and up to an inch of snow on the 6-kilometer course at Michigan State University's Forest Akers, Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) was the 40th of 293 runners to pass the 1-mile mark, with an interval time of 5:58.2. Near that point of the race, said head coach Jennifer "Jay" Hartshorn, Selkin was stepped on numerous times, resulting in one of her shoes dislodging from her foot.

"The shoe was half on for a bit and then fell off," said Hartshorn. "The ice and snow kept accumulating on her sock, so she decided to drop out because she couldn't really move well and obviously didn't want to get hurt.

"It's disappointing, but these things happen. It just was not the right conditions to run with just one shoe."

Competing as an individual at the meet for the second straight year, Selkin was hoping to finish among the top 40 runners and earning All-America honors, following her 48th-place finish in 2021.

Selkin is the first Mount Holyoke cross country runner to compete at the NCAA Championships. She will be graduating from Mount Holyoke next month.
