Cross country places sixth at NEWMAC Championships, with Selkin the overall runner-up

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College cross country team took sixth place among 11 teams on Sunday at the NEWMAC Championships, behind a second-place overall performance by senior Lauren Selkin and backed by a strong middle pack of runners.

The Lyons scored 155 points the place in the center of the conference standings, 10 points behind fifth-place Wellesley (145) and 66 points ahead of seventh-place Springfield (211). MIT won with 30 points, with Smith (62), Coast Guard (97), WPI (113) and Wellesley rounding out the top five. After Mount Holyoke and Springfield came host Wheaton (242), Babson (257), Clark (265) and Emerson (313).

Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) finished the 6-kilometer course at Highland Park in 21:56.7, only 3.3 second behind overall leader Gillian Roeder of MIT. Selkin finished 12 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Laurel Kruger of Smith.

Following Selkin in the scoring for the Lyons was a tight pack of runners stepping up with strong performances. Sophomore Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) placed 39th out of 134 runners at the meet with a time of 24:16.4.

Sophomore Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.) was close behind Lancaster in 42nd place (24:19.4), followed by junior Bridget Hall (Arlington, Mass.) in 44th (24:24.1), and sophomore Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) rounding out the team scoring in 62nd place at 25:15.3.

Mount Holyoke's scoring displacers were senior Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.), 73rd overall in 25:44.4), and junior Lily Nemirovsky (Bedford, Mass.), 78th overall in 25:53.3.

Next up for the Lyons are the NCAA Division III Regional Championships, taking place Nov. 12 at 11am at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.
