Springfield, Mass. - October 19, 2019 - Racing among 17 teams at the Western New England Invitational on Saturday morning, the Mount Holyoke College cross country team took first overall with 40 points on the 6k course.
Winning its second meet as a team this season, Mount Holyoke College totaled 40 points on the afternoon and defeated schools such as University of New England (111), Wheaton (118), Bridgewater State (122), Westfield State (131) and Worcester State (138). Mount Holyoke College also topped NEWMAC foes such as Babson (166) and Clark (318).
Leading the Lyons on Saturday was the duo of Hannah Rieders (Wellesley, Mass.) and Madeline Rieders (Wellesley, Mass.), who both finished first with a time of 21:56 on the course, as they were followed by Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.), who was 11th with a time of 22:57. Olivia Griesmer (Austin, Texas) was next with a time of 23:06, while Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif.) was fifth on Mount Holyoke College with a time of 23:18.
The next wave of Lyons' student-athletes was led by Sarah Hyde (Arlington, Mass.), who posted a time of 24:07, as she crossed just ahead of Meryl Phair (Stockbridge, Mass.), who notched a time of 24:24. Then followed Sophia Gronbeck (Westfield, Mass.) with a time of 24:42, ahead of Emma Raney (Palo Alto, Calif.), who produced a time of 24:56. Katie Milligan (Scituate, Mass.) followed Gronbeck and Raney and had a time of 25:00.
Sophomore Sophia Anderson (Morrisville, Vt.) was next with a time of 25:22 to finish 57th overall, while Anderson was followed by Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.), who posted a time of 25:38 and Kayla Dillon (Great Barrington, Mass.), who crossed in 25:39. Amanda Kearney (Teaneck, N.J.) notched a time of 25:49, while Natalie Rodman (Upton, Mass.) followed with a time of 26:12.
Rounding out the day was Sammi Craig (Austin, Texas), who finished with a time of 26:28, just ahead of Marlena Klein (South Windsor, Conn.), who crossed in 26:33. Following Craig and Klein was Michelle Serrano (Los Angeles, Calif.), who produced a time of 26:59, while Charlotte Lindblom (Takoma Park, Md.) finished the course in 27:35. Olivia Wrobleski (Fall River, Mass.) also competed and finished in a time of 28:09.
It was quite the day for Mount Holyoke College, as there were many student-athletes that put forth personal-best times on the 6k course. Those student-athletes include Hannah Rieders, Madeline Rieders, Selkin, Griesmer, Jacob, Hyde, Milligan, Ravino, Anderson, Kearney, Dillon, Gronbeck, Rodman, Wrobleski, Lindblom, Klein and Craig.
Up next, the Lyons will compete in the 2019 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, which will take place at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Sunday, November 3.
