Cross Country Records Second-Place Finish at UMass Dartmouth Invitational

North Dartmouth, Mass. - September 21, 2019 - Competing at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday afternoon, the Mount Holyoke College cross country team took second overall with 92 points among 37 teams competing on the 5k course.

Mount Holyoke College was also the top Division III team in the meet, as it produced a team average of 18:59.73, the best of the entire field. Mount Holyoke College also defeated WPI and Brandeis, which are both ranked in the Top 10 of New England, as well as St. Anselm, Assumption, New Haven and Franklin Pierce of Division II.

Mount Holyoke College also had student-athletes competing in the JV race, which featured 16 schools, and the Lyons came away with a fourth-place finish with only one Division III team ahead of them. 

Leading the pack for the Lyons was Hannah Rieders (Wellesley, Mass.), who finished the course in 18:28.19, as she was followed by Madeline Rieders (Wellesley, Mass.), who crossed in 18:28.27. The duo finished fifth and sixth overall, respectively, as they also both had personal-best times on Saturday. First-year Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) was next for Mount Holyoke College, as she finished in 19:17.45, while Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif.) was next with a career-best time of 19:17.87. Rounding out the top five was Olivia Griesmer (Austin, Texas), as the first-year crossed the finish line in 19:26.85.

Sophomore Sydney Nash (New Hartford, Conn.) was next with a time of 19:40.64, while Sarah Hyde (Arlington, Mass.) clocked in at 20:41.64, followed by a career-best effort from Katie Milligan (Scituate, Mass.), who produced a time of 20:44.78. Of the returning group, both Nash and Hyde posted career-best times at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.

Senior Emma Raney (Palo Alto, Calif.) was the Lyons' top performer in the JV race, posting a career-best time of 20:41.50, as she was followed by Sophia Gronbeck (Westfield, Mass.), who turned in a time of 20:54.54. Meryl Phair (Stockbridge, Mass.) was next with a time of 21:01.88, as she was followed by Amanda Kearney (Teaneck, N.J.), who notched a career-best time of 21:06.89. Rounding out the top five was Devan Ravino (West Kingston, R.I.), who posted a time of 21:08.81 and Kayla Dillon (Great Barrington, Mass.), who finished in 21:18.94. Additionally, Olivia Wrobleski (Fall River, Mass.) had a course-best performance as the junior turned in a time of 21:53.93.

Putting forth career-best times at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational was also Sophia Anderson (Morrisville, Vt.), who posted a mark of 21:30.66, Sammi Craig (Austin, Texas), who recorded a time of 22:37.23, and Charlotte Lindblom (Takoma Park, Md.), who produced a time of 22:17.16.

Student-athletes that had season-best performances on the 5k course were Griesmer, Dillon, Gronbeck, Marlena Klein (South Windsor, Conn.) and Phair. Klein produced a time of 22:53.17.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will head to Franklin Park in Boston, Mass., the site of the 2019 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, and will compete in the Codfish Bowl on Saturday, September 28, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
