2016-17 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS & SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced its All-Academic Teams as well as its Scholar-Athletes for the 2016-17 season. Nine members of the Lyons squad were recognized, while the program was honored for the 14th straight season. It also marked the 15th time in the last 16 years that the team has earned All-Academic honors.
Individually, nine student-athletes were named 2017 Scholar-Athletes by the organization. All have continued to show remarkable dedication to not only honing their craft in their sport, but also in the classroom.
Senior captain Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii), who earned her third straight Scholar-Athlete honor from the ITA to lead the way. During the 016-17 campaign, she posted an outstanding 15-1 overall mark in singles action, including a 7-1 record against NEWMAC opponents.
Rising senior Katherine Schumacher (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) also garnered her third ITA nod, posting a 2-1 record in singles in 2016-17. Classmate Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern High School for Girls) earned her second straight recognition, finishing the season with a 9-7 overall record in singles action. She also posted a 5-4 mark in doubles action.
Rising junior Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) was 4-4 during the 2016-17 season, earning her second ITA nod, while classmate Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) also garnered ITA honors for the second time. During the 2016-17 season she had a solid doubles record, going 12-6, including 10-4 from the third flight.
Captain and class of 2017 graduate Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./Dwight-Englewood School) earned her first ITA honor after going 13-8 overall in doubles action. She was 8-6 from the second flight, including a 5-3 mark in the NEWMAC.
Other first-time honorees for the Lyons included rising sophomores Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls' HS) and Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS), along with rising junior Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Prep).
Huang went 14-6 in singles action from the second flight, while also posting a 12-6 mark in doubles. Peabody also had an outstanding rookie season, going 15-7 overall in singles and 11-7 in doubles play. Both were named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament Team. Maran went 1-0 in singles action.
The Lyons posted a 14-8 record during the 2016-17 campaign, going 5-3 in NEWMAC play. The squad defeated Wheaton in the conference quarterfinals for the third straight season, advancing to the NEWMAC Semifinals for the third straight season and the seventh time in program history, falling to eventual champion MIT.
In order to earn Scholar-Athlete status, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter recipient, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their institution for at least two semesters. To qualify as an All-Academic Team, a program must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20.
