Tennis Defeats Wheaton, 7-2 in NEWMAC Opener

NORTON, Mass. - It was a Battle of the Lyons on Saturday afternoon as Mount Holyoke College bested Wheaton College, 7-2, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams. With the win, the Lyons of MHC move to 2-0, while the Lyons of Wheaton are now 0-1.

MHC saw a strong effort in the opening doubles action, jumping out to a 2-1 lead. In the third flight, the duo of senior captains Alexa Colas and Amy Chen posted a dominating 8-1 win over junior Arielle Klopsis and sophomore Connor O'Keefe.

The second flight also picked up a great win, as junior Ishita Tibrewal and first year Catherine Peabody gutted out a 9-7 victory against Wheaton junior Jodi Katz and first year Harley Swainston. Wheaton picked up its point in the first flight as sophomore Ines de Bracamonte and first year Isabelle Garvanne bested MHC sophomore Ayame Yazawa and first year Ching-Ching Huang.

Singles action was strong for Mount Holyoke as Chen posted the Lyons third point from the sixth flight with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Klopsis. Tibrewal picked up the fourth point of the match after her opponent in the third flight was forced to retire.

Huang made it a 5-1 advantage for MHC in the second flight after she posted a 6-2, 6-3 win against Garvanne, while her doubles partner Yazawa, powered her way to victory at one over de Bracamonte, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Mount Holyoke earned its seventh point of the match from the fifth flight as sophomore Madison Rosen earned the 6-2, 6-4 win over Swainston. Wheaton grabbed its second point from the fourth flight as O'Keefe defeated Peabody, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

MHC returns to action on Monday when it hosts Simmons at 11am, while Wheaton is back on the courts next Saturday hosting NEWMAC-rival Springfield at 1pm.
