Tennis Powers Its Way To An 8-1 Victory In Season Finale

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team used a sweep in doubles to kick-start an 8-1 victory over Endicott College in the season finale. With its second win in a row, the Lyons end the season with a 14-8 record, while the Gulls fall to 11-6.

Sophomore Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (Vt.)) and first year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls') got things going for the Lyons with a strong 8-2 performance at first doubles over sophomore Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) and classmate Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam Killingworth).

Senior captain Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and sophomore Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) followed with an 8-4 victory from third doubles, while senior captain Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and first year Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS) completed the doubles sweep with an easy 8-3 win to make it 3-0.

Momentum for MHC continued into singles play with Yazawa picking up a 6-1,6-0 over Endicott's Barnett at the top of the flights. At second singles, Huang clinched the deciding point after cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win against Fitzgibbons to push the lead to 5-0.

Next to finish was Chen at the five, earning a 6-1, 6-3 win in her final match, followed by Peabody defeating Andreasen 6-2, 6-3 from the fourth spot to give MHC a 7-1 advantage.

Tibrewal played Gulls sophomore Lauren Rahr to a 6-1, 6-4 victory, but sophomore Alexi Losano (Saugus, Mass./Austin Preparatory) gave Endicott it lone point with a 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) victory at the bottom of the flight to end the dual match, 8-1.
