Golf Collects Fifth Place at Middlebury Invitational

Alexandra Irish MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (Oct. 3, 2010) – Led by junior Alexandra Irish, the Mount Holyoke College women's golf team earned fifth place at the Middlebury College Invitational this weekend. A total of six teams and 33 individuals took part in the tournament, which was hosted by the Ralph Myhre Golf Course (par 71 – 5,801 yards).

Irish recorded a two day total of 167 (82, 85) to secure fifth place overall. The Lyons also received a boost from senior Sarah Keating, whose tally of 174 (83, 91) was good for 10th place. Sophomore Felicitas Gerlach grabbed 20th place with her score of 192 (100, 92).

With Georgiana Salant and Alexandra Groetsema leading the way, Williams College sprinted to the team title. The Ephs finished 40 strokes in front of second place Middlebury (692) with their total of 652. Vassar College (706), Amherst College (708), Mount Holyoke (729) and Westfield State University (902) rounded out the field.

Salant took home medalist honors with her two round tally of 155 (75, 80). She finished just two shots in front of Groetsema, who carded a 157 (78, 79). Middlebury's Flora Weeks fired a 163 (78, 85) to take third place.

Mount Holyoke will return to action on Saturday, when it competes in the Williams College Fall Classic. The two day tournament is slated to conclude the following day.
