WELLESLEY, Mass. (Apr. 9, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2011 Seven Sisters Championship. After blanking Bryn Mawr College 5-0, the Lyons fell 5-0 to host Wellesley College. Both contests took place at the Keohane Tennis Courts.
In other action, Wellesley topped Smith College 5-0 to wrap up its perfect day, and Vassar College secured 5-0 wins over both Bryn Mawr and Smith. Wellesley and Vassar ended the day tied for first place with 10 points apiece. Mount Holyoke sits right in the middle of the standings with five points, while Bryn Mawr and Smith are both scoreless.
The five team round robin tournament will conclude with five more matches tomorrow. Mount Holyoke (6-10, 3-4 NEWMAC) is slated to face off against Smith at 9:00 a.m. and Vassar at 12:00 p.m.
Mount Holyoke cruised to a 5-0 triumph over Bryn Mawr in its first outing of the weekend. It was the third season in a row that the Lyons have defeated the Owls at the event.
Sophomore Nahrhee Han dropped the first set of her number one singles match before winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Meanwhile, senior Elise Marifian and first year Maya Sayarath each prevailed in straight sets at numbers two and three singles, respectively.
Mount Holyoke's two doubles teams each won in straight sets, as well. Senior Natalie Hsiang and junior Sarah Moore occupied the top spot, while first year AnnElizabeth Konkel and junior Heather Richardson handled the second slot.
The Lyons then faced off against Wellesley, falling by a score of 5-0. All five matches were decided in straight sets.
